Tam Ha-fong 譚霞舫 (1914-1927)

updated December 7, 2013.

Dentist.

HONG KONG nlt.1914. Holder of Certificate of Exemption (one of the first 13 listed in the Government Gazette 1915) under the Dentistry Ordinance, 1914 [1] to practice dentistry 1914-27. Private practitioner nlt.1914-1927.

[The given names of Tam seem the ones given to a woman. If that is correct then Tam was Hong Kong's first registered dental practitioner.]
[1] Certificates of Exemption were issued to dental practitioners who lacked the academic qualifications recognized by the Dental Board (essentially the General Medical Council in UK) to qualify to register. Generally speaking, only qualifications awarded by institutions located on the Britain Isles or in British Overseas Territories were recognized.
